Neal Asbury opened his nationally syndicated “Neal Asbury’s Made in America” show on Radio America (now on 44 stations) by accusing the federal government of continuing their ongoing propensity for wasting tax payers’ money.
“What a big difference it would make to our economy if we invested in good programs that created jobs and raised revenue, instead of wasting money on needless programs. Even if we can’t stop waste completely, we should be able to slow it down,” proposed Neal, who added that even Reader’s Digest estimates that the federal government wastes more than $1 trillion a year.
Co-host Dr. Rich Roffman agreed, illustrating as an example of waste the $880,000 federal grant to study the sex life of New Zealand snails.
Joining the show as a return guest was former Congressman Bob Beauprez (R-CO), founder of “A Line of Sight,” a policy resource that presents informed commentary on issues ranging from education to foreign policy, and energy to politics.
“There are 15-20 million uninsured Americans under ObamaCare, which promised to end this situation. Costs are going up, along with the number of people uninsured,” said Beauprez, who added that healthcare is in worse shape than when ObamaCare started.
Neal Asbury agreed, who has personally felt the brunt of ObamaCare costs while renewing his health insurance contract for his 200+ employees, where the costs of insurance for a worker is about $15,000.
“The ugly secret under the ObamaCare mandates is that it doesn’t cover family members. So you have workers making $20,000 a year that have to devote 1/3 of their paycheck to cover premiums and the deductible. That just won’t work for most families,” said Neal.
Beauprez confirmed Neal’s projections and added that people obtaining individual insurance plans will see their premiums go up by an average cost of 32 percent. Obama’s plan to create insurance exchanges that will encourage insurers to compete against each other to lower costs isn’t working. No providers have joined the exchanges because they don’t know what their risk will be.
“The real losers in all this are young people. Since ObamaCare forbids adjusting premiums based on age, young, healthier people will be paying three times the premiums they would have if they hadn’t been covered by ObamaCare, where they will be paying to insure sicker, older people,” said Beauprez.
Neal returned to the topic of government waste, wondering how the government could pay millions of dollars to fund the video gaming industry while money can’t be found to allow buglers to blow taps at the funerals of deceased military veterans.
“It’s an outrage. They risked their lives for this country and we can’t afford to honor veterans with a bugler to play taps?” asked Neal.
Dr. Roffman added that this is another example of a government that is practicing “hurtful, sad, pathetic and partisan decisions” at the expense of the American taxpayer.
Neal noted that this is part of the Obama administration’s practice of selective sequestering, where they can find money for pet projects, but can’t pay for important programs that help Americans.
“People are taking notice, like small businesses. They see this waste when they are looking for access to capital to grow their businesses and hire workers. It’s no wonder that the percentage of small businesses expecting higher earnings is down 26 percent or that the percentage of businesses expecting the economy to improve has dropped to 28 percent. A study found that one in four small businesses are not hiring because they worry they may not be in business in 12 months. That’s a recipe for disaster,” noted Neal.
Joining the show as a return guest was Rosemary Jenks, the Director of Government Relations for NumbersUSA, who recently wrote that “The U.S. Constitution gives Congress — and only Congress — the authority to decide federal immigration law, but the Obama administration has come up with an extensive list of ways to ensure that a majority of the illegal aliens in the United States are allowed to remain here.”
Jenks proposed that while the Obama administration talks about “immigration reform,” they are actually alluding to “amnesty” for the 11 million undocumented aliens.
Neal noted that “Immigrants are learning the system. They know that every 20 years America essentially institutes a new amnesty program, like the new one being proposed. Then non-skilled immigrants can bring over their unskilled family members, which will swell the undocumented alien population to more than 45 million. Unemployment insurance is the destination for new immigrants.”
Jenks agreed, telling listeners about the new “amnesty plus” program that will create a large scale guest program for more low skilled workers.
“It’s like we don’t want our American workers to work; they can just collect benefits. Meanwhile, we’re adding to our unskilled work force, like the new government website entitled WelcometoAmerica.gov which encourages immigrants to come to America so they can start collecting welfare checks,” said Jenks, who added that the U.S. is creating a foreign peasant class made up of unskilled workers who benefit from government handouts and who can be hired by the nation’s elite to do menial jobs at wages far below the prevailing rate.
Co-host Dr. Rich Roffman was astounded that the Obama administration trumpeted the fact that by adding all the current illegal aliens to the workforce it would provide a shot in the arm to the economy.
“What kind of benefit does it add to the economy when we add 11 million unskilled workers?” asked Dr. Roffman.
The final guest on Made in America was first time guest David McAlvany, from the McAlvany Financial Group, who suggested that inflation has become a stealth tax, reducing earnings by investors based on the projected growth of the gross national product (GNP), which McAlvany says is grossly overstated.
“What is happening is that by overstating the rate of inflation, the government can reduce social security payments which are tied to the cost of living, which the government is manipulating. At the same time, investors think they are getting five percent on their earnings, but they are actually having them reduced by two percent or more due to the manipulated inflation rate and taxes,” said McAlvany, who suggested that “the Obama administration can talk recovery into existence, but they are fudging the numbers and the economy is not recovering.”
Dr. Roffman and Neal continued their ongoing segment on government waste and cronyism, and highlighted how cronyism is impacting job creation, especially for young people.
“Instead of wasting money on something like the $68 billion high speed rail system being built in California –which goes nowhere—that money should be invested to spur the growth of industries like electronics, software development and cutting edge technologies. America created these industries, which are ideal for today’s graduates, but instead, 70 percent of graduates can’t find jobs, or are under-employed and have to live back at home. That’s not the heritage that built this nation. We can start filling these high tech jobs right now if we really starting seriously talking about jobs,” concluded Dr. Roffman.
Each week Neal Asbury’s Made in America provides Neal’s insights into the week’s top news stories and their impact on the worlds of entrepreneurship, small business ownership and the overall economy. Neal’s analysis, together with co-host Dr. Richard Roffman, a veteran 30-year publisher with extensive domestic and international experience, takes a non-biased approach based on real life experience in business as an American manufacturer and exporter.
