Made in America Panel Urges Obama to Support Domestic Oil Production to Boost Economy and Create Good Paying Jobs

Neal Asbury opened his nationally syndicated “Neal Asbury’s Made in America” show on Radio America (now on 45 stations) with his astonishment that President Obama is trumpeting the rise in U.S. oil exports while his administration continues to beat up the oil industry.

Co-host Dr. Rich Roffman characterized this as “oxymoronic.”

“Drilling on federal land is down 31 percent over last year, and yet the president is congratulating himself on the boost in energy exports,” proposed Dr. Roffman.

Continuing the discussion on oil was return guest Michael Bastasch, whose column in The Daily Caller entitled “White House Praises Oil Drilling While Blocking it on Federal Land’ reports that “skyrocketing domestic oil production is really starting to pay off, as oil exports caused government economists to revise economic growth in the second quarter upward by 1.7 percent to 2.5 percent growth.”

One of the outcomes in the rise in domestic energy production is that it has reduced energy costs for American consumers, putting $1,200 back into their pockets, according to Dr. Roffman.

“With greater support by the administration, oil could create many more high-paying, full-time jobs, but this administration seems only interested in jobs that are created in the Green energy sector. This hasn’t worked out and I think you’re seeing a shift in public opinion that is supporting oil and the jobs that it can create,” concluded Bastasch.

Neal and Dr. Rich Roffman continued their ongoing discussion on job creation, with Neal commenting that the new goal for too many Americans is to collect welfare, social security disability, foot stamps and part-time fast foods jobs.

“How can we be a super power when we are only creating low paying, part-time jobs? We’re seeing the results. Black home ownership is at an 18-year low, and part-time workers are working toward poverty,” said Neal, who added that even the AFL-CIO, once supporters of Obamacare, admits that it has caused worker hours to drop to 29.5 per week.

Dr. Roffman concurred, adding that 40,000 longshoremen have dropped out of the AFL-CIO due to its support of Obamacare.

“This country is going in the wrong direction. We’ve created a lost generation of teenagers who can’t find jobs, while we have the SEIU telling fast food workers to go on strike, which will only reduce jobs and hours if hourly rates rise,” said Dr. Roffman.

Joining Made in America for the first time was Joe Starrs, Director of U.S. Summer Programs for The Fund for American Studies, which uses internships to prepare young people for leadership in the life of their communities and the nation by providing them with opportunities in the nation’s capital for enlightenment and enrichment.

“We’re seeing a war on internships that ignores the idea that internships offer a tried and true path to employment. Yet, people who offer internships are being accused of exploiting kids. In most cases when people apply for a job, employers are more interested in your employment record than your GPA,” said Starrs, who added that his program finds positions for 500 interns a year in Washington, D.C.

Starrs noted that while the administration attacks internships, the federal government offers more internships than any other sector, and the jobs are without pay.

The final guest on Made in America was radio host Jim Messina, who finds it ironic that President Obama can talk about a living wage for fast food workers when he has never run a business and has no business management experience in the private sector.

“People are beating up on fast food owners, but these are mom and pop operations, run by owners who risked everything to open a franchise. Their employees have historically been young people who want to gain some work experience, not make it a career.  Nobody should want to make fast food work a career,” said Messina.

Messina noted that while the media has taken the side of the picketers, the truth is that very few are actual fast food workers.  They are bussed in by the SEIU who want to gain members and dues, estimated at about $160 million annually.

“If the SEIU wins this battle, workers are going to be sorely surprised when they learn that any increase in hourly wages will largely be eaten up by union dues,” concluded Messina.

Neal and co-host Dr. Rich Roffman concluded the show by returning to the topic of cronyism and its impact on job creation.

“It’s hard to believe but the administration and the EPA are introducing regulations that will address water vapor in the atmosphere.  I think we call this rain, but if an Obama crony can make money on it, money will be available from the administration,” said Dr. Roffman.

In this case, a $550 million contract has been awarded to Biolyndra, a hi-tech Silicon Valley startup backed by billionaire investor, and long-time Obama supporter, George Soros.  The program proposes to use genetic engineering to create plants that will capture water vapor out of the atmosphere with their leaves and return it as liquid to the ground via their roots.

“In elementary school science class, I think we called this photosynthesis. Plants don’t really need any help recovering water vapor,” proposed Dr. Roffman.

Each week Neal Asbury’s Made in America provides Neal’s insights into the week’s top news stories and their impact on the worlds of entrepreneurship, small business ownership and the overall economy. Neal’s analysis, together with co-host Dr. Richard Roffman, a veteran 30-year publisher with extensive domestic and international experience, takes a non-biased approach based on real life experience in business as an American manufacturer and exporter.
