Join the Movement to American-Made Products

I’m adamantly against profiling — except when it comes to profiling American-made goods. American consumers should do a better job “profiling” anything manufactured in this country and then purchase those goods. You may be surprised to know that when both foreign- and American-made products are offered, the Made in USA product is usually less expensive, and by a wide margin.

Besides spending your money wisely, there is another important reason: It creates American jobs, which contributes to American prosperity.

I recently visited the Made in America Movement website and came away with some persuasive reasons to buy products made here, especially around the holidays.

Scott Paul, founding executive director of the Alliance for American Manufacturing, and Alex Bogusky, creative advisor for Made Movement, wrote in a column on The Huffington Post:

“We’d be remiss if we didn’t remind you that giving American-made gifts can do something that Congress hasn’t been able to do for years: Help bring manufacturing jobs back to the States. America lost roughly a third of its middle-income factory jobs in the 2000s; and only about one in 11 of them have been added back since the end of the Great Recession.

“But if each of us purchased one additional American-made gift this year, that alone would support somewhere in the neighborhood of 100,000 to 200,000 new jobs. We’d be able to tell Congress: If we can do it, you can pass policies to support American manufacturing too.”

On my Made in America radio show, I recently had on Lawson Nickol, president of All American Clothing, a Texas-based company that profitably manufactures jeans and other clothing made in America. He is proof positive that this country cannot assume that American manufacturers cannot compete with other countries — even when it comes to clothing.

As a result of his commitment, he sustains some 400 American jobs.

Is this an isolated story?

Not if you believe a Boston Consulting Group (BCG) survey conducted this past November. The survey found that companies are rediscovering the benefits of manufacturing in the USA.

They project that companies that have moved manufacturing back to America — known as “reshoring” or “back shoring” — will create between 2.5 million and 5 million American jobs by the end of this decade.

Those new jobs will not only be in American factories, but also in services that support manufacturing. BCG estimates that the increase in both U.S. exports and domestic goods production that otherwise would have been imported will create between 600,000 and 1.2 million factory jobs, while another 1.9 million to 3.5 million jobs could be created in such services as transportation, logistics and retail.

I am an exporter and serial entrepreneur who is investing in American manufacturing companies, preserving U.S. jobs and supporting the communities in which my companies exist.

According to Julie Reiser, president and co-founder of Made in USA Certified, which audits supply chains for businesses that want their products to bear their seal, “Buying Made in USA is not just a passing trend. It truly is something we as consumers, business owners and even the government can do to support small to mid-size businesses.

“Small businesses are responsible for two out of every three new jobs created in the U.S. We need these small to mid-size businesses to flourish and grow as they are our innovators, producers and job creators. Making it in America, supporting U.S. manufacturing and buying American is one thing we can all do today to help keep the American dream alive and well.”

World News with Diane Sawyer recently ran a new series titled “Made in America,” which revealed that “if every one of us spent an extra $3.33 on U.S.-made goods every year, it would create nearly 10,000 new jobs in this country.”

For an administration desperately in need of good news about job creation, why doesn’t President Obama take one of his frequent road trips and devote it to one simple message: “If you want America to support jobs — support America by buying American.”

No nation on Earth can beat the U.S. commitment to superior quality, innovation and productivity. This is a message that should ring out throughout this land.

Think what a difference it could make next Christmas if everyone made a commitment to buy products Made in the USA. People would get the Christmas gift they wanted most: a good job.
